Susan's Story<\/h1>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

After reading The Diary of Anne Frank<\/em>, Susan began her first diary at age 14 and is still sustained by hidden pages of her journals.
<\/span>
Years later Susan found her way into California Poets in the Schools. She discovered that helping people play with words often led them to profound self-discovery.
<\/span>
Guided by prompts and gathered words, a teen in the juvenile hall wrote, \u201cI\u2019m a brown gangster colliding with death\/I\u2019m a rose, slamming love with hate.\u201d In just 14 words, he described his behavior and saw that underneath it all, he was a rose.<\/span><\/p>

poemcrazy<\/em> was once listed # 7 on a Penguin Random House list of <\/span>28 best books on writing. The College Board has used three or four chapters of poemcrazy<\/em> <\/span>to prepare students for the SAT tests.
<\/span><\/p>

Susan\u2019s chapbook of poems, Bathing with Ants<\/em>, was published in 2004 by Bear Star Press. <\/span>Poet Alison Luterman wrote:<\/span><\/p>

Susan\u2019s book, Foolsgold: Making <\/em><\/span>Something from Nothing\u00a0<\/em> on creative process was published by <\/span>Harmony\/Random House in 2007. Rachel Naomi Remen, M.D. (author of Kitchen Table <\/em><\/span>Wisdom<\/em>) wrote: <\/span><\/p>

\u201cFoolsgold<\/em>? …in a word, beautiful. Beautiful, beautiful! And, of course, a book <\/span>that may save your life.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>

Both poemcrazy<\/em> and Foolsgold<\/em> were Quality Paperback Book selections.
<\/span><\/p>

Susan has a B.A. in anthropology from Barnard College and an inter-disciplinary masters in <\/span>art and writing from CSU Chico\u2013where she developed a love for performance art as well as <\/span>collage, printmaking and ceramics. She worked for many years writing jacket and catalog copy <\/span>at the University of Illinois Press, and as a photojournalist for the Butte County Office of <\/span>Education. <\/span><\/p>

Susan has held workshops on creative language with thousands of adults and children <\/span>first as a member of California Poets in the schools, independently and with Poets <\/span>& Writers. <\/span>
<\/span>
Susan holds workshops and talks at writing festivals, retreats <\/span>and schools. <\/span>After a one-hour workshop, a principal wrote:<\/span><\/p>

\u201c[This workshop] is the <\/span>best thing that\u2019s happened to me at Harper High School [in Chicago] in five years.\u201d <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>

For over twenty years, Poets and Writers (for many years in partnership with California <\/span>Center for the Book) sponsored Susan on a yearly rural libraries tour. Susan has presented <\/span>sessions in over 80 libraries in California. She recently led sessions for Poets and Writers <\/span>workshop leaders in both Los Angeles and San Francisco. <\/span><\/p>

Jamie Asaye FitzGerald, director of Poets & Writers\u2019 California Office (and Readings & <\/span>Workshops, West) writes:<\/span><\/p>
